Master piper, ace teacher and Bagpipe Society committee member, David Faulkner, has volunteered to run a monthly Zoom session for pipers on the first Monday of the month leading up to the 2021 Blowout. They will be held for an hour between 7.30 and 8.30pm (GMT). Here’s what he has to say about them:

The idea is for us to get together via Zoom once a month and share some enthusiasm, repertoire, questions and learning. We will try and theme the sessions and aim to be inclusive about what we play. Each session may well include questions about pipe technique and life in general!

If you have music you would like to be included in the sessions please submit scores to me by email for consideration. I will look at it in regards to how it may fit the month’s brief, the challenges that it offers and how much space is available in the session. Not everything can be played! Music will be posted and shared at the sessions and hopefully posted online beforehand as well. It might be that we do some learning by ear as well as reading the dots; this will depend on the music and what needs to happen etc.

7th December will be about tunes with connections to Winter, Christmas, things cold and festive! G pipes
4th January will be tunes from the William Vickers Manuscript. G pipes
1st February will be about playing some easy tunes! D pipes
1st March let’s get technical, ‘pipers surgery’ G & D!!

Update!!

The first session, on 2nd November, was very successful with about 20 people joining. There were pipers from all corners of the country. We played through quite a few well known, and less well known Playford tunes. We thought about how we might approach the music and what technical challenges they presented, a bit like a session with extra bits!

I’m now looking forward to the next sessions. December’s will be winter tunes and January’s will be pieces from the William Vickers manuscript. Send suggestions!
